Nearly 900 million people do not have access to clean drinking water.
2.5 billion - nearly 40% of the world's population - do not have access to basic sanitation facilities.
The effects on children are devastating. 1.5 million children die each year from diarrhea as a result of not having clean water or adequate sanitation facilities.
This online training module will help you learn about UNICEF's water and sanitation programs and how you, as a U.S. Fund for UNICEF volunteer, can share this information with others.

IMPROVED DRINKING WATER COVERAGE
Two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered with water. But less than one percent of that water is accessible and safe to drink.
The availability of this one percent is not distributed equally. There are more than 6 billion people in the world. However, where humans live is not directly connected to where clean water is supplied. For example, fifteen percent of the world's freshwater supply is found in the Amazon Basin which serves less than one percent of the world's population. What is one of the most pressing factors that determine whether a country can access improved water sources?
The country's level of poverty.

Americans have access to clean drinking water in their homes, schools and workplaces. The level of access to water in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia varies due to differences in infrastructure and the distance it takes to travel to a water-source.
